Punjab assembly elections and the large population of Sikhs in Delhi tilted the scales in favour of Taranjit Sandhu for the prestigious post of the L-G, Delhi. Highly placed sources said that a Haryana bureaucrat missed the train despite hectic lobbying by a Union Minister close to PM Narendra Modi.

The LG is the personal choice of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Shah is handling the Punjab elections issue and the BJP is keen to win Punjab. Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa met the LG and thanked PM Modi for appointing Sandhu as LG, describing it as recognition of a proud Sikh legacy. He added that it reflects Modi’s deep respect for the Sikh community and the historic Sikh struggle for rights and dignity.
