Over three decades ago, long before she rose to become Haryana’s Additional Chief Secretary, Sumita Misra scripted a daring operation that could rival the plot of a Mumbai thriller.
At the time serving as ADC in Kurukshetra, Misra was confronted with reports of a spurious ghee manufacturing racket operating in the region. The challenge, however, lay in catching the perpetrators red-handed with irrefutable evidence.
Young, energetic and determined, Misra devised an unconventional plan. Posing as a decoy customer, she approached a local dairy owner with a request for several quintals of ghee, purportedly for her sister’s wedding. The order was readily accepted.
What followed was a meticulously timed operation. As the delivery was being arranged, Misra coordinated a raid, ensuring that the accused were caught in the act. The operation successfully exposed what was believed to be the country’s first major fake ghee manufacturing unit.
The story, marked by presence of mind, strategic planning and courage, quickly drew widespread attention. It was reported not only across India but also in international media, earning Misra significant acclaim for her decisive action.
An episode rich in drama and resolve, it remains a standout example of administrative ingenuity in Haryana’s governance history.
