Flashback: When the Khaki Split Along Caste Lines in Haryana.

Some 40 years ago, the uniform meant to uphold the law in Haryana stood exposed—fractured by caste, power, and impunity.

At the centre of the storm was Ramphal, then SHO of Bhonda Kalan ( Gurugram)an officer accused not of enforcing the law, but of bending it for personal gain. Allegations ranged from framing innocents to extorting money.

The crisis erupted when then Vigilance SP R.S. Rajan ordered a raid. What followed was not compliance, but open defiance. Ramphal allegedly drew his service revolver, threatened the raiding team, and fled on a motorcycle. Official records later showed him “on duty” miles away in Gurugram—suggesting influence had already begun to rewrite the narrative.

Then came the counterstrike.

In a dramatic twist, Ramphal filed a case at his own police station, accusing DSP (Vigilance) Chanderbhan of molesting his wife and issuing threats. The move—reportedly made on the advice of a senior IPS officer—flipped the script overnight. Ramphal claimed the corruption probe was a cover, portraying himself as the victim.

The police force soon split—not just along ranks, but along caste lines. Ramphal alleged he was being targeted because he was Dalit, transforming an internal disciplinary matter into a volatile caste flashpoint.

But the most disturbing chapter was yet to unfold.

Allegedly enraged by the raid, Ramphal later led a police team to the complainant’s home. What followed, according to reports, was a display of brutality: family members, including women, were assaulted. Three individuals were dragged to the police station, subjected to custodial torture, and falsely booked in a murder case that, in reality, never existed.

The case eventually collapsed. It was fabricated.

But by then, the damage had been done—to lives, to public trust, and to the credibility of the uniform itself.

This was not merely the story of a rogue officer. It was a stark reflection of a system where power could intimidate, records could be manipulated, and caste could fracture the very chain of command.Tailpiece.
