Gurugram:Double Murder Case Against DGP Manoj Yadav Registered Under Political Pressure Despite Senior Officers Knowing His Innocence
In a controversial incident dating back nearly 28 years, a double murder case was registered against former Haryana DGP Manoj Yadav under alleged political pressure, despite senior police and administrative officials being aware of his innocence.
At that time, Manoj Yadav was serving as Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Rohtak. The then Superintendent of Police Baljit Sandhu, DIG Rohtak Range V.K. Kapoor, and Deputy Commissioner Gulab Singh were all aware that Yadav was not present at the site of the police firing that led to the deaths of two accused.
According to accounts from that period, Jind police had chased some criminal suspects into Rohtak district, where the accused reportedly took shelter in a village. During a police operation, the suspects were killed in an encounter. The incident triggered protests by local residents, who alleged foul play.
Amid growing public anger, the then Haryana Chief Minister Bhajan Lal allegedly came under political pressure and ordered the registration of a double murder case against Manoj Yadav at Sampla police station, even though he was only the supervisory officer and not present at the scene.
At the time of the firing, Manoj Yadav was attending a private function at the residence of Dr. Rajshree, who was then serving as DSP in Rohtak and is now an Inspector General of Police. Senior officers including SP Baljit Sandhu and DIG V.K. Kapoor were also present at the same event, making it clear that Yadav could not have been involved in the incident.
The matter gained further attention when SP Baljit Sandhu’s statement was reported in The Indian Express, confirming that although a case had been registered against Manoj Yadav, he was not present at the location when the incident occurred. Manoj Yadav reportedly preserved that newspaper clipping as evidence of the truth.
Affidavits Before Inquiry Commission Confirmed His Innocence
During the subsequent inquiry, Dr. Rajshree, her husband Colonel Rajbir Singh—an Indian Army officer—and her father J.L. Kuralwal, a former member of the Haryana Public Service Commission, submitted sworn affidavits confirming that Manoj Yadav was present at their residence at the time of the encounter.
Such affidavits, especially from serving Army officers, are considered rare, but were submitted to ensure that an innocent officer was not wrongly implicated. Their statements played a crucial role in helping the inquiry commission establish the facts and uncover the truth behind the controversial case.
The incident remains a striking example of how political pressure can influence police proceedings, while also highlighting the role of honest officers and witnesses in upholding justice.
