Nearly two decades ago, then Director General of Police Nirmal Singh took a bold stand that became the talk of Haryana.
Acting on intelligence inputs, Singh learned that an open prostitution racket was operating right outside a police station in Panchkula. He immediately dispatched his flying squad to conduct a raid, which confirmed the allegations. During the operation, the station in-charge of Police station arrived at the scene and reportedly attempted to intimidate the officers, claiming direct access to powerful political figure of the state.
When the flying squad briefed Nirmal Singh , he ordered the officer’s suspension, despite being aware of his proximity to one of the state’s most influential leader.
The move earned Singh widespread praise in Panchkula. and allover the State. However, the suspended officer soon approached his political patron and lodged a complaint against the DGP. The leader—known for generally not interfering in police matters—called Singh for an explanation.
Singh’s response was blunt: “Sir, open prostitution outside a police station.”
While the leader acknowledged that the officer had done favors to him ,Singh stood firm. A week later, after another request, Singh partially relented—revoking the suspension but transferring the officer to the police lines, effectively sidelining him and sending a strong message.
When asked about the incident, Singh reportedly remarked that the account “appears to be accurate,” indicating that the intelligence inputs at the time were indeed reliable.
Many such accounts from Singh’s tenure will be featured in the upcoming book “Inside Story of Haryana Police.”
