Loss in Panjab would have been unimaginable had there been no dams across the three rivers at this moment.
Look at the totally reverse picture on Haryana side. Flow in Yamuna river is causing headache to the people of Yamunagar and Delhi.
Why floods in Panjab this year.?analysis by our enlightened reader R.N.Malik ret Engineer – in -Chief ,Haryana.
Panjab is passing through very difficult period due to severe floods in 10 districts falling in Doab region. Tribune revealed that 1988 floods were still worse as more than 500 people lost their lives and 70 were untraceablethat year. Another friend intimated that 1955 floods were the worst. I have no idea of 1955 floods but I remember the 1988 floods. 1988 floods were totally different than 2025 floods. At that time , as usual, reservoirs of both Pong dam and Bhakra Dam were full. Ranjeet Sagar dam was under construction. Unexpectedly, there was 640mm of rain between 23rd to 26th September in entire Himachal and additional flow could not be withheld and consequently, flood gates of both Beas and Satluj had to be opened suddenly to save the dams and a discharge of 3 lac cusecs from Pong and 4 lac cusecs from Bhakra Dam had to be released. That sudden rush of flow did the damage.
This year, flood gates were not opened till 3rd of September and as reported in Tribune, the flow in Ravi was 4 lac cusecs and 3.2lac cusecs in Satluj. This flow was due to heavy rains in the downstream subhilly regions of Himachal and Panjab. Only now, a discharge of 75000 cusecs is being released from Bhakra gradually.
Loss in Panjab would have been unimaginable had there been no dams across the three rivers at this moment.
Look at the totally reverse picture on Haryana side. Flow in Yamuna river is causing headache to the people of Yamunagar and Delhi. The river is flowing at 207m level and space between the Yamuna bridge and the flow level has been reduced to bare few centimeters. All this has been happening because there is no dam on river Yamuna and it’s tributories. All successive CMs of Haryana and Delhi are responsible for this negligence. Even the Water Resources Ministry of GOI.
The floods of this year have shown the essentially of storage dams. Had these 3 dams been not in Panjab rivers, entire Panjab might have been drowned. In case of Yamuna, fortunately, the discharge released at Tajewala was not more than 3.5 lac cusecs whereas, a flow of 5 to 6 lacs cusecs has passed from there in end August or September quite often.
It is because of these reasons, Jawaharlal Nehru ji equated the importance of dams to temples. It was purely his initiative that a massive and aggressive program of building multipurpose storage dams was initiated right from the year 1947.
