International Pets Day: Desi Dogs vs Pedigree Dogs.
Today is International Pets Day. Generally, the word “dog” is used by people as an insult or to show contempt, but the truth is that a dog is far more loyal than a human being.
I am currently living in Gurugram, where proper pet clinics exist for the treatment of dogs. There are even facilities available to transport sick animals from home to the hospital.
Well-known actress Raveena Tandon has also appealed to people to adopt dogs instead of buying them.
Pedigree dogs are often quite expensive, but desi (Indian native) dogs are no less intelligent. Their alertness and sense of smell are remarkable.
An incident from about five decades ago illustrates this. Near the canal bridge in Jind, just ahead of the cremation ground, stood the house of lawyer Balraj Sheoran. He had a desi dog and also kept buffaloes tied in front of his house.
One night, the dog kept barking continuously. Thinking it was disturbing his sleep, he scolded the dog. The next morning, it was discovered that a theft had taken place in the house—and the dog was missing which was found after few hours.
Two days later, the same dog attacked a rickshaw puller on the road in front of the house. In fact, when the thieves had entered the house, the dog had barked at them. They beat it with sticks, but it kept chasing them and eventually collapsed unconscious near Patiala Chowk.Jind
After two days, when a rickshaw puller stopped in front of the house to fix his chain, the dog recognized him and attacked him. Later, it was revealed that the same rickshaw puller and his accomplices were involved in the theft. The dog had identified them through its powerful sense of smell.
