Ch. Chhotu Ram and the Peasant Welfare Fund

As Revenue Minister in the erstwhile Panjab of undivided India, Ch. Chhotu Ram had set up a Peasant Welfare Fund and used to contribute a part of his salary to this fund. A portion of the fund was utilized to help talented but economically disadvantaged students pursue their studies.

Dr. Abdus Salam (1926–96) of Pakistan, who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1979 along with two other scientists, was also a recipient of this scholarship when he went to Cambridge for higher education. Dr. Salam felt deeply indebted to his Mathematics Professor, A. Ganguly. In 1981, Dr. Salam met him and placed his Nobel medal around his neck as a gesture of gratitude. Such should be the respect for teachers.
