Appreciable intervention of Supreme Court-SIT headed by Haryana ADGP Kalaramchandran to record statement of four years Gurugram rape victim in plainclothes at her home accompanied by Psychiatrist in informal way while having tea with her parents

In a significant and sensitive intervention, the Supreme Court of India has taken note of the alleged rape of a four-year-old girl in Gurugram, adopting a firm stance in light of reported police negligence.

Hearing a petition in the matter, a bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant ordered that the investigation be transferred from the Gurugram Police to a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by ADGP Kalaramachandran. The SIT also includes senior महिला police officers, reflecting the court’s emphasis on sensitivity in handling the case.

Taking its intervention a step further, the Court directed that the SIT, accompanied by a psychiatrist, visit the child’s home in plain clothes to record her statement. It emphasized that investigators should interact with the child in a natural and comfortable environment—engaging with her parents informally, even over tea—so as to ensure the child does not experience any psychological distress during the process.

Earlier, the apex court had made strong observations regarding the functioning of the Gurugram Police and withdrew the probe from its jurisdiction. It has also made it clear that no consideration will be given to granting bail to the accused at this stage.
