Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the central government have received major relief from the Supreme Court in the matter of the new UGC guidelines. The apex court has stayed the operation of the guidelines, allowing the Modi government to breathe a sigh of relief amid growing political and social backlash.
The newly introduced UGC guidelines had triggered widespread opposition across the country. Strong reactions emerged from the academic community, student bodies, and various social groups. Significantly, dissent was also visible within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with signs of internal revolt over the issue.
With the Supreme Court staying the implementation of the guidelines, the immediate pressure on the government has eased. Political observers believe that Prime Minister Modi may now attempt to project himself as a well-wisher of SC, ST, and OBC communities, while portraying himself as constrained by judicial intervention.
This development is being viewed as a “win-win situation” for the ruling dispensation. On one hand, the court’s stay has shielded the government from mounting criticism; on the other, it offers an opportunity to seek sympathy from marginalized communities by shifting responsibility to the judiciary.
All eyes are now on the Supreme Court’s final verdict and how the government recalibrates its political and policy strategy in response to this crucial issue.
