Gustakhi Maaf Haryana – Pawan Kumar Bansal
Remembering Jagjit Singh
By our enlightened reader: Natrajan Bala Baskar
We celebrate the life and music of Jagjit Singh (08 February 1941 – 10 October 2011) on the occasion of his 85th Birth Anniversary.
Jagjit Singh popularized ghazal singing by selecting poetry that resonated with the common masses and composing music that placed greater emphasis on the meaning of words and the melody evoked by them. His distinctive style brought depth, simplicity, and emotional honesty to the ghazal form, making it accessible to a wider audience.
His rendition of Rahi Masoom Raza’s “Ajnabi Shehar Mein Ajnabi Raaste” remains my personal favourite. As I could not find a link to that particular song, I am sharing another one of my all-time favourites—“Kagaz Ki Kashti.”
