Gustakhi Maaf Haryana: Discipline, Simplicity, and a Life Well-Lived — By Pawan Kumar Bansal
After my recent remarks on the eating habits of Haryanvi leaders, many readers grew curious about my own routine—what keeps me active and engaged even at the age of seventy.
Let me share a glimpse of my daily life:
Despite living with heart disease, prostate concerns, acidity, and diabetes, I follow a disciplined and balanced lifestyle. I retire early, usually around 10 p.m., and begin my day as early as 2 a.m.
My mornings start with a light cup of tea infused with ginger and tulsi. The quiet hours that follow are devoted to writing—accompanied by the soulful voices of Kabir and Abida Parveen, which create the perfect ambiance for reflection and creativity.
After writing for nearly three hours, I step into my garden, spend time with plants, go for a morning walk, and practice yoga to keep both body and mind in harmony.
My diet is simple and consistent. I eat three meals a day, each consisting of two plain rotis with dal or seasonal vegetables, along with chutney and a hand-crushed raw onion. I also enjoy sugar-free tea with biscuits three times daily.
While I generally maintain discipline, I occasionally indulge in a glass of beer or Old Monk rum.
Seasonal fruits and hydration are essential parts of my routine—guava, bananas, and even occasional treats like boondi and besan laddoos find their place in my diet.
Tailpiece:
Plants and flowers are my greatest stress busters. It is often joked that “Bansal cannot be bullied or bribed, but present him with flowers or plants, and his pen may soften.” I openly admit—call it corruption if you will—but I happily accept plants and flowers. Alongside this, I also have a deep appreciation for artwork, which brings me immense joy and peace.
