Defeat of No-Confidence Motion Against Om Birla Doesn’t Prove Fairness — It Was Only a Numbers Game

The defeat of the no-confidence motion against Om Birla, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, should not be interpreted as proof that he has been fair, unbiased, or fully committed to democratic and constitutional principles.

Political observers point out that the outcome of the motion was largely a numbers game in the House. With the ruling side holding the majority, the motion’s defeat was expected and does not necessarily validate the Speaker’s conduct or impartiality.

Critics argue that the Speaker’s role is crucial in maintaining the dignity of parliamentary procedures and ensuring that all members are treated equally. For the credibility of parliamentary proceedings, it is important that the Chair functions with complete neutrality.

They believe that in the future the Speaker should avoid any conduct that may be perceived as unparliamentary or partisan, so that the traditions and integrity of parliamentary functioning remain intact.
