Ajay Singhal has revealed a startling encounter with cyber fraudsters who attempted to trap him and his wife using a so-called “digital arrest” scam. The attempt, allegedly originating from a Pakistani number, was thwarted due to timely vigilance.
Attempt to Intimidate Using ‘Digital Arrest’ Ruse
Singhal told the callers posed as police officials, even displaying an image of a police inspector to appear credible. They tried to intimidate him into compliance under the pretext of a “digital arrest.” However, the foreign number immediately raised suspicion, prompting him to remain cautious. When confronted, the callers reportedly used abusive language before disconnecting.
Family Also Targeted
The cybercriminals also reached out to his wife in a parallel attempt to exploit the situation. Fortunately, she had already been advised about such fraudulent tactics, preventing any harm. The incident underscores how cybercriminals are increasingly targeting even senior officials and their families.
‘Abhedya App’ Launched to Combat Cybercrime
In response to the rising threat of cyber fraud, Haryana Police has introduced a new initiative — the Abhedya App. The app is designed to block suspicious international calls and WhatsApp messages, while allowing users to whitelist trusted global contacts to ensure essential communication remains unaffected.
Tested Before Public Rollout
Officials confirmed that the app was tested on 25–30 users before its public launch, with initial results proving satisfactory. Additionally, a dedicated unit has been set up to monitor and tackle cybercrime more effectively.
Public Urged to Stay Alert
DGP Singhal has urged citizens to remain cautious of unknown international calls and report suspicious activities immediately. He emphasized that in the digital age, awareness and vigilance remain the most effective tools against cyber fraud.
