Chaudhary Devi Lal ruled the hearts of the people, which is why he was fondly called Jananayak (the people’s leader). His close connection with rural communities and his simple, direct style of communication were his greatest strengths. His manner of speaking and simple attire had such an appeal that people felt instantly connected to him and remained loyal for life. He had an exceptional ability to understand the pulse of the people and connect with them accordingly.
During his tenure, he introduced several welfare-oriented schemes. He launched the old-age pension scheme in the state, which gave dignity and security to the elderly, bringing a sense of respect and happiness into their lives. He also introduced unemployment allowance for jobless youth and made bus travel free for those going for job interviews. These initiatives helped him earn immense respect across all sections of society.
In 2010, during a conference of the Public Relations Society of India (PRSI) held at the five-star hotel “Sonar Bangla” in Kolkata, former BBC Chief Correspondent Mark Tully spoke extensively about Chaudhary Devi Lal’s communication and public relations skills. While citing several leaders, he particularly highlighted Devi Lal’s exceptional style of public engagement.
Through his effective communication, dedication to public service, and impactful policies, Chaudhary Devi Lal truly earned the title of Jananayak. Today, leaders from all political parties pay their heartfelt tributes to him.
