Statements by leaders on unseasonal rain and hail over ripened crops are quite striking. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan assures that farmers will not suffer losses. Haryana’s Agriculture Minister Shyam Singh Rana even calls this rain a gain of two quintals per acre for farmers, while Irrigation Minister Shruti Choudhry praises it as the “blessing of Lord Indra,” glorifying the Chief Minister.
However, in reality, direct rain on standing ripe crops often causes damage—grains turn black, lodging increases, and rot sets in. Farmers are losing sleep over this. It seems that while the ministers see gains in their figures, in reality, the very morsel from farmers’ mouths is being taken away.
