Cohesive teamwork by the CDSCO leadership and the ASGI team has sent a strong and clear message to manufacturers regarding patient safety.
The present SLP was filed by the Union of India against Marion Biotech in connection with the death of 14 children due to impurities of EG and DEG in cough syrup in Uzbekistan. Initially, the manufacturing licence was suspended by the State Licensing Authority (SLA). Subsequently, on appeal before the State Government, the manufacturer was allowed to resume manufacturing subject to certain conditions.
Thereafter, the DCGI intervened, and the State Government’s Appellate Authority revised its decision and recommended suspension of manufacturing. This suspension was challenged by the manufacturer before the Hon’ble High Court of Allahabad, which permitted the resumption of manufacturing.
The CDSCO then approached the Hon’ble Supreme Court. The Hon’ble Supreme Court has now admitted the SLP, issued notice, and stayed the operation of the High Court’s order.
The cohesive teamwork of the CDSCO, its leadership, and the ASGI team has successfully conveyed a strong message to manufacturers that patient safety remains paramount.
